Remote controlled cars, helicopters, and planes have long been the province of boys and men. They were designed to look manly and perform to the extreme.
Finding girls interested in the area was something of a rarity. In line with the recent move to create feminine versions of popular toys to more closely align with traditional girl’s tastes, Spin Master has created the Flutterbye Flying Fairies. This is a remote controlled helicopter that is actually a fairy.
Let’s Take A Look At Some Of The Features
To say that Flutterbyes are remote control toys is something of a misnomer because they don’t use actual controls. There is no control handset. Instead, the feet of each fairy contain an infrared detector system. When a hand or object is detected underneath the fairy wing propellers adjust the height.
These cute faries were originally released several years ago with two fairies: Stardust, who is blue and purple, and Flower, who is pink and purple. Now there is a whole fairy family to choose from.
Back when they were released Flutterbyes were priced at $34.99 retail. Nowadays (Sep 2016) there is a whole range of prices.
First because of the extended fairy family and second because of the number of sellers.
The lowest price seen on Amazon recently is $9 and the highest price is $99.98 – for Snowflake. The most common price is around $30 but there are $12’s and $15’s as well.
Just take care with your selection and compare different sellers too.
Things We Like About Flutterbye Flying Fairies
Not every girl likes fairies and pink. But for those that do it is nice to see toys that are designed to appeal to their tastes. Like the Nerf Rebelle, (a Nerf bow designed for girls) these fairies open up the world of remote controlled helicopters previously reserved for boys.
On top of that, the fairies just look incredibly cute and convincing as they fly around.
Things We Did Not Like About Flutterbye Fairies
It’s seems that a full battery charge lasts about 20 minutes of flight time. While each one includes a charger and built-in batteries, it is not clear yet how long each charge will take. The average time seems to be about 30 minutes
Who Would Buy Flutterbye Flying Fairies?
Any parent of a girl who likes fairies, which, according to national trends, is most of them!
While not officially announced, the fairies will very likely have a warranty providing coverage against defects.
Are The Flutterbye Fairies Worth the Money?
The answer to this will be different for everyone because of the wide variety of both faries and prices. Some of the Amazon reviewers just love their purchase. Others think it was a poor purchase.
There are a number of comments about poor flight performance and how easily the they are damaged. Never to fly again. A quick scan of the Amazon stars and there are no 5’s to be seen. Most look to be in the 3.5 to 4 star range.
Just make your own assessment before commiting to a purchase.
Where Can I Buy Fairies?
The Fairies are readily available online at Amazon. ANd no doubt some will be available at bricks and mortar toy stores like Toy R Us.
